Nuuk is the capitol for Greenland, which for now is still part of Denmark. They do have a semi-autonomous government, but are still very much dependent on Denmark for much of their funding. There is a plan that one day they will be their own country, and when that happens, Nuuk will be the furthest North country capitol in the world.
The little town is quite rich in art and hisotry, with several sculptures in town expressing their desire for independence.
The museum in town was most impressive, housing quite a collection of folk art, animal taxidermy, and a collection of traditional Kayaks and boats.
One of the most prized item in its collections, the Qilakitsoq mummies, which were discovered in 1972 and are some of the best preserved specimens ever found in Greenland. These people were all buried in a rock pile on a cliff in the cold arctic climate which essentially freeze dried their bodies.
The City of Nuuk is quite modern with seral shopping malls, a university, retirement homes, and a cutural center where they host the Inuit Winter games.
