2023 Greenland and Canadian Arctic Expedition Cruise – Uummannaq, Greenland

Post 14 of 22

Did you know that Santa makes his summer home in Uummannaq, Greenland? That is what the children of Greenland have been told since the move production company built a turf house in the hills, and since then it has been known as Santa’s Castle. Some of the expeditioners hiked up to the house, but we didn’t want to do such a strenuous hike, and chose to tour the town. Our expedition guides were stationed about town to point out the sights and what we should see around town. There was an interesting turf house with many traditional artifacts, as well as a town museum that had displays about the mining operations in the area and the luminescent rocks.

The Uummannaq Mountain is probably the most striking feature, but there is also a huge post box in town that has thousands of letters to Santa.

Due to the wind and the weather our ship has to anchor quite bit from town which made for an adventurous zodiac ride in and out of town. The grounded icebergs enhanced the experience.
