This is a point where the lava flows were relatively recent, and we were able to observe some of the “Pioneer Plants” that first take root in the lava and eventually break ufp the hard lava of thousands of year to form a fertile soil for lush vegetation. Later, we did a tender cruise around the lava outcroppings where we spotted sea lions, marine iguanas and flightless cormorants.
