In Montevideo, our group enjoyed a city highlights tour and a visa to the Bouza Winery. In downtown, we got see the central part of the town which holds Independence Plaza where stands the Placio Salvo, once the tallest building in Uruguay, the Mausoleo De Jose Gervasio Artigas, nation hero/founding father of the country and Citadel Gateway. This area is connected to the port by a long pedestrian street, so even if you don’t have a tour, it is easy to visit it. From there, we circled around town to the Parque Palermo home of the 60000 fan Soccer Stadium where the Monumento a la Carreta stands. We also saw many of the beaches that are so much a part of the Montevideo culture. All that was leading up to our ultimate tour, a visit to the Bouza Winery just outside of town. They do grow grapes in this area, but only the ones that thrive in the hot climate. They grow other cooler climate grapes in other areas. We got a tour of the winery and then sat down for a 4 wine tasting with charcuterie. We all really enjoyed trying another South American region’s wines. Tannat, which was originally from Southern France, is the most cultivated grape in Uraguay.
