The only bad thing I can say about our stay in Auckland is that it was too short. We started our day by attending Mass at the Cathedral of St Patrick & St Joseph in down town Auckland. The nice thing about the Catholic Mass is that it is so similar world wide. The cathedral was a few blocks walk from the cruise pier, which also gave a chance to see down town Auckland with its many historic buildings and new skyscrapers.
Then we were off on the ferry to Waiheke Island, sometimes called New Zealand’s Island of Wine. We would have liked to have spent all day here with the Hop-on-Hop-Off bus tour, but we only had a few hours. We visited two wineries there: Mudbrick and Cable Bay. Both offered extensive wine tasting experiences with white, rose, and red wines. We also enjoyed an authentic New Zeeland lamb lunch at Mudbrick’s on site restaurant. Both wineries offered extensive ocean views. This trip was not only wonderful for the wines, but also the scenery and the lovely ferry ride across the bay.
