The small town of Vidin, Bulgaria had a big increase in population when the communists decided to relocate people from their farms to cities to work in factories as part of their industrialization efforts. The town does have some lovely architectural buildings that date back to second Bulgarian empire. Today some of the the town is not much to look at with abandoned factories and many very ugly and decaying concrete apartment buildings, hence our tour took us out of that river city and out to the beautiful romantic town of Belogradchick where we visited the famous rocks and fortress. This fortress dates back to Roman times when fortifications were added to the natural rocks to form the site.

Before heading back to the ship we also visited the Baba Vida Fortress overlooking the Danube in the heart of town. Its construction began in the 10th century. You will also notice the roses in the garden outside the fortress. Highly valued rose oil is on of the top products for Bulgaria.
