This was our first trip to Alaska that included Icy Strait Point. This area is a tourism private island developed and run by the Tlingit native Alaskan tribe. They used to log the area, but decided that they couldn’t rely on that source of income forever and decided to get into the tourism business. The destination has won numerous awards including port of the year! We found this to be a great way to experience the natural beauty of Alaska. We enjoyed both a morning hike in the rain and afternoon hike as the sun came out. The port also offers a variety of excursions including a ropes course, off road vehicles, cable car gondolas that take guests from one side of the port to another. A cannery museum also features displays about the one time canning operations in the area as well as shops that feature art by local native Alaskans and books about Alaska, along with a bunch of typical souvenirs.
