Our visit to Hilo Hawaii is one for the history books. The reason I say that, is that about a week after our return, Pele decided that she was going to redecorate the island, and many of the sights that we saw were destroyed by the 2018 Kilauea lava flows. The geothermal pool/ turtle pond is gone, and Pohoiki Bay is now a black sand beach. Many of the past lava flows that we walked on were covered with new lava. The Lava Tree State Monument did manage to survive the redecorating. Unaffected was the beautiful Rainbow Falls, located right in downtown Hilo. It is one of the most accessible waterfalls in Hawaii. We had a cloudy day, but it was so beautiful regardless.
