30 July 2009 – Cunard Line’s Executive Chef Jean-Marie Zimmermann hosted the esteemed James Beard Foundation aboard the line’s flagship Queen Mary 2 when it docked today in Brooklyn, New York. The exclusive “foodie” event included a cocktail reception in the ship’s nautically themed Chart Room and a four-course lunch in the grand, two-storey Britannia Restaurant – specially prepared by Chef Zimmermann himself. Pictured with him is Susan Ungaro, President of The James Beard Foundation.
Chef Zimmermann joins the prestigious list of culinary superstars such as Daniel Boulud, Emeril Lagasse, Nobu Matsuhisa and Jacques Pépin, who have delighted the palates of members of the James Beard Foundation, one of America’s most well known culinary arts organizations.
Named Cunard’s Global Culinary Ambassador in 2007, Chef Zimmermann is responsible for overseeing culinary functions for Cunard Line’s renowned luxury ocean liners, including the new Queen Elizabeth, joining the fleet in 2010.
“It is truly an honour for both myself and Cunard to be chosen by the James Beard Foundation for this opportunity,” said Chef Zimmermann. “I was able to showcase the magnificent Queen Mary 2 and the ship’s wonderful cuisine for members of this prestigious organization.”
Born in Strasbourg, France, in a small region of Alsace, Chef Zimmermann discovered his love of cooking at an early age. His culinary career has taken him to Cannes, Monte Carlo and London, each stop affording new opportunities to demonstrate his mastery, earning accolades and awards along the way. For five years he served as head chef and proprietor of his own fine dining establishment, Warrener Restaurant in Henley, Berkshire, which earned him a Michelin Red M, an Egon Ronay Star and a Michelin Star. In 1998, friend and fellow Three-Star Michelin Chef Michel Roux tapped him to serve as corporate chef for Celebrity Cruises, launching Chef Zimmermann’s career at sea and ultimately leading him to Cunard Line in 2004.
“Chef Jean-Marie Zimmermann is an exceptional chef and a true star in the culinary world,” said Izabela Wojcik, Director of House Programming of the James Beard Foundation. “We are thrilled to have had him and Cunard host an amazing culinary experience onboard Queen Mary 2,” she added.
