Has anyone done these jobs (ie. stage, lights, stage management) and if so what was your experience like?  Would you suggest it?

I can't speak first hand, but I have talked with many of the tech crew while on cruises.  I am always curious with the crew how they got into what they were doing.

They all said they liked what they were doing.  Most seemed  fairly young (there was probably others more behind the scenes I never talked with) and not too many had done it for a long time.  So, maybe its a short term, but rewarding experienc?

Maybe a few will see this and give us their first hand opinion…

Hi apouse - I've worked as an entertainer on two different ships and worked with a lot of technicians.

The technicians hired as part of the entertainment staff and work under the direction of the Cruise Director and Technical Director (lead technician).  These techs are in charge of every entertainment set-up on the ship.  If the show band is playing at the pool, the tech set up all the equipment and make sure it's working.  If a new guest performer comes on the ship, the techs set their lighting, sound, props and everything else.

Tech work a lot!  But yes, I've found that most techs enjoy their jobs.  I think it's gratifying to know that your work is critical to the success of your co-workers.

Mr. Papa, I hope you won't mind if I include a link here.  I write a blog about working as a musician on cruise ships.  Apouse, if you are interested in learning more about working in the entertainment department on a ship, you could find some information at the Chronicles of a Cruise Ship Musician.

Best of luck!

Dave
