Thanks for your comments Joan, even though Celebrity has relaxed its dress codes recently, I have found that most passengers dress nicely for the evenings and most remain in their formal attire even after dinner on formal nights.

I enjoy cruising with Celebrity since I enjoy the formality of dressing up for dinner! It's like going out to a classy restaurant 6 nights in a row. If people don't want to dress more formally, the choice is theirs - use a cruise line that is less formal. That's what I would do if that is what I wanted. Easy! No need for complaint - just choose the service you require.. The main reason I choose Celebrity is their more formal cfruise and most importantly, as an asthma sufferer, their very strict smoking policy. That is my choice. In this ever more casualised world it's lovely to have the opportunity to wear the 'glad rags' now and gain and especially in the sumptuous surroundings of a 5 star cruise ship.

Kathy, Unfortunately Cruiseline Formalwear does not supply ladies clothing for Celebrity, though they do for Princess and Holland America.

The key is packing something that is light weight and formal at the same time. A simple black dress of crepe or jersey would be fine. Most of my gowns are jersey or light weight satin and take up less space in my suitcase than a pair of pants. Also, a sparkly top to be worn with you skirt or dress pants that you were already packing is fine. The ladies have a lot more freedom when packing with-in the dress code and need not bring along an entire extra outfit. Formal nights are very nice on Celebrity, but don't stress yourself out. Pack something that easily fits in your suit case and meets the basic requirements of the dress code if you don't care to go "all out".

Happy cruising and I hope you'll come back here to Cruise Talk and share your experience with us here at Cruise Talk.

Since this is going to be my first cruise, I did my research, but still found info on Celebrity's dress code confusing. Like most women, I'd love to dress up, but going to Alaska in Sept with a 1-yr-old I'll have more than enough things to pack. I'd be fine with a totally casual cruise, but not many lines cruising Alaska offer in-cabin babysitting, which was one of our priorities. On Millenium, men can at least rent a tux, but what about us - ladies?

I still prefer a more traditional formal cruise. One of the nice things about cruising is that we have many lines from which to choose. I like to see the main dinning room be a place to dress up. It just makes the experience that is included in the price of the cruise that much more special. I hope that there will always be some lines around that keep that tradition. On the other hand, some lines will choose to go more casual because there is a growing market for more casual cruises.

I too am a cruise info junkie and dinner wear is without a doubt the most heated debate on cruise critic at the moment. I think with more offices going business casual and the fact that you are limited in what you can pack on an airplane we are only going to see dress codes relax more and more. I think all the cruise lines should let the main dining rooms go basically all casual and allow those who want to dress to the 9's do so in the more upscale pay restaurants.
