I Traveling Girl, I too hope that wiser heads will prevail and the cruises will still be allowed to make the technical stops. Otherwise the cruises out of Washington and Seattle will just move to Mexico and Canada.

I hear a suggestion on another website that maybe the rule that needs to change is the one requiring American hotel staff on the NCL America ships. It seems that the Hotel and Wait staff positions are the ones they have the most trouble filling on NCL America. They pay is not really very good by American standards so they are scraping the bottom of the barrel. By contrast the pay is excellent by foreign standards and the cruise lines are able to bet the cream of the crop.

Just a reply to Cruise Arizona. I don't think the law has to be changed, I have traveled to Alaska many times and always enjoy the stops in Canada. The ships have never been required to stay for 48 hours in any port, even American ports. Sometimes you only get a partial day and must hurry back to the ship. The reason NCL is having so many problems is that the American staff they hire are not used to work. I could not believe the difference when we sailed the Hawaiian Islands with NCL, the room steward came in to introduce herself, sat on our bed and said she felt like throwing up. Yuck! When we inquired what was wrong with her, she told us she was pregnant and when we said congratulations, she told us she was getting an abortion. This said in front of our two girls. There was not enough wait staff in the Windjammer and tables were not cleared. I saw staff wiping tables with a dirty rag and touching dirty plates and then clean without washing their hands. I could go on and on.......

I really don't think the ports of San Diego, LA and Seattle are going to suffer. The cruise companies know the rules and they should obey them. I have no problem with stopping in Ensenada, I just stay on the ship.

I just wanted to make a few more comments on just how stupid it would be for them to make this change. The cruise lines would not stay in Ensenada for 48 hours, so more than likely the cruises to Hawaii and Alaska will all move to either Mexico or Canada. This means that the Ports of Seattle, LA and San Diego will loose a significant portion of their cruise business to Ensenda and Vancouver. It also assumes that passengers currently cruising Princess, Holland America, Celebrity and others would then change over and start cruising NCL America. NCL simply does not offer the same product that these lines are offering, and most passengers are particularly loyal to a few lines. Also many passengers choose these RT Mainland to Hawaii cruises because they would rather not make the long flight to Hawaii and enjoy the cruising experience of the days at sea.

Hopefully representatives of California and Washington will band together and persuade the powers that be not to require a 48 hour stay at the foreign ports.
