Balcony Room Upgrade Confirmed!!!
I got a call from my TA today regarding the Mercury Family Ocean View room for my upcoming Alaska cruise in June. Lori Cunningham of Sky Scraper Tours called this afternoon to let me know that my room would be upgraded in the Dry Dock to a Category 2a, which is a veranda room.
This is great news to us because we had been hoping to book a balcony for our Alaska Cruise, but when we booked the Mercury last year, they did not have any cabin categories less than a sky suite that would accommodate 4 people with a balcony. A few months after the booking we heard that Mercury would be undergoing a multi million dollar renovation similar to the one done on the Century last year. We had hoped that the upgrade would include the conversion of our cabin to a Veranda. This could easily be done because the Mercury already had a little used public deck off the back of the ship outside of these rooms. All the cruise line would need to do it convert the door to a window and partition off that deck into private verandas.
I couldn’t have asked for a better news….We now have a great oversized room, on a great ship, with great private views of Alaska. Lori also offered to move my Mother-In-Law and husband’s Aunt to a similar room on the back of the ship with us. They currently in a mid ship 2A balcony cabin, but might enjoy being in a larger room on the back of the ship with us.
Be sure to check back with me as I’ll have more information about the new room and Alaskan cruise.

Great news!
You will have some room for the four of you to spread out!

just wondering-what are the best deals on a balcony room (or better) on an adult type cruise–don’t want to do a kid thing. also want rather informal, comfortable and relaxed with two people traveling. Alaska cruise 2007.
Hi Penny, Glad you found my site.
My first suggestion would be to go to my dress code page and see which line fits your idea. The most casual is NCL which offers many different casual dining options and formal nights are strictly optional. Celebrity is one of the most formal, but I noticed on my recent cruise that many passengers dressed more casually on the Alaska cruise than our previous Hawaii and Mexico cruises. They also offered more casual dining options on the Alaska cruise due to the late times in port.
Balcony rooms are the most expensive of the regular size rooms, so it can be hard to find a deal on a balcony room. The best rates are in the shoulder seasons of May and September.
Also, the best way to have fewer kids on your cruise would be to go on one of the late season cruises in late August or September. During the summer months of June, July, and early August, when school is out, there are often many kids on board. On our recent Celebrity June Alaska cruise there were 170 kids on boad, many part of extended family groups.
